Urgent Review needed into the outrageous hike in Qld land valuations
Last month, landowners across the state were left stunned after receiving land revaluation notices which showed eye-watering increases in the unimproved value of their land.
At least one farmer in Mackay was hit with a 300 percent increase, despite having made no changes to the property since it was last valued in 2019.
Property owners from near Nerada, told me the unimproved value of their properties had risen 60.9 percent, 62 percent and 63 percent.
Similar increases were shown to me for grazing paddocks and rural residential areas across the Southern Tablelands.
None of the Land Valuation notices contained any explanation as to why property values had risen so dramatically, or how the increases on individual properties had been assessed.
No doubt there has been some rise in land values in certain regions, but many of these hikes were just outlandish.
All this comes at a time when many property owners, particularly in the regions, are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living, including 9 consecutive interest rate rises.
These people are now frantic at the thought that the revaluations will be used to hike rates and land tax on their property.
They deserve a detailed explanation as to how the unimproved value of their properties were calculated, with specific reference made to their individual property.
Many farmers already face the loss of their properties due to unpaid rates that amount to a mere fraction of the investment they’ve ploughed into the land over many years.
All of this appears to part of the ongoing attack on property rights in Queensland.
Increasingly, Queenslanders have lost all their traditional protections, with government bureaucrats allowed to strip away people’s private property rights at will.
For too long people have obeyed and kept quiet, paying all charges, penalties and fines meted out to them, no matter how outrageous.
A return to transparent and accountable government is long overdue.
There needs to be a full and independent Review carried out on the precise methodology used to assess land values in Queensland.
This should include an investigation into why so many revaluations were carried out in 2022.
Who instigated them and why?
Did it have anything to do with the fake privatisation of the Titles Registry in mid-2021?
Or the billions in extra debt the government keeps taking on?
I urge all Queensland landowners unhappy with their property’s revaluation, to lodge an ‘objection’ using the links below.
